Winter Wonderland...Georgia style
This is what a snowy, metro-wide shut down looks like on our front lawn. I know, its really hysterical to my northern co-horts...this is just a typical beautiful looking day in September to you...hahaha.
However, down here, this level of dramatic dusting constitutes a total shut down and eggs, milk, and bread being torn off the shelves and arm wrestled for in the aisles of the grocery store in the days leading up to the impending doom. My neighbor coined the term "Survival Casserole" to explain what it is exactly people make with all the milk, eggs and bread people obsessively buy in the days leading up to the threat of snow in the south.
We all knew the hopeful possibility of a snow day today when we went to bed last night. When my alarm went off this morning, sure enough, the first thing I heard was that schools were closed metro-wide. For most all of you who don't understand this...the best explanation I can muster without laughing too hard is that, truly, we are not equipped down here at all to deal with any snow or ice on the roads. We have no salt/sand trucks heading out in the wee hours of the morning to make our commutes safe. People don't own shovels. Most have never heard of a snow plow. We are literally paralyzed by 1 inch of snowy dust on the ground and ice on the roads. Not to mention noone knows how to drive down here on anything less than sunny, dry pavement, so all our lives are at risk if we dared venture out on such a day as this. Better to just shut the city down and stay alive! :)
So back to the snow day...the kids gleefully put on a pathetic mish-mash of what they deemed "cold weather gear" and ran out to frolick in the...in the...in the...oh what a buzz kill. Grace contemplated laying on the patio to try a snow angel, and Sarah aparantly licked the ground. But that was about it. And being that it is only 15 degrees here, which is truly BRUTAL for the south, they quickly changed their plans, headed back in, popped some popcorn and headed down for some tv.
Ahhh, life in the south. We are so sheltered from the realities of my beloved Minnesotans up yonder. Go ahead and laugh at us, you deserve it, you people are hardy stock!

Shall we revist the snowman we built on Christmas day? I think it might be time for you to reconsider a winter visit. I wouldn't want your children growing up thinking that is an anything less than amusing reality. Still I woulnd't mind an occasional snow day around here...

ReplyDeleteFrom what I can tell, this statement is true of all drivers everywhere (except for me, of course). Honestly, even the sun can cause problems for Minnesota drivers - slightly overcast is preferred : )
Oh gee dere yah. Yah got just a wee little dustin down dere. I've got to get back to de ice house in a bit. Oof-dah, you Georgians get the day off schoool fer that? Up nort we get an hour delay if da snow's half wey up da dooor.
